The Way We Talk — When living in a new country, do we completely assimilate, or do we fiercely hold onto who we are?

While The Way We Talk is a story about the deaf community, its core message holds a mirror up to anyone who has ever left Hong Kong to build a life overseas.

Directed by Adam Wong, the film beautifully captures the agonizing struggle of "identity" through three distinct characters. Sophie (Chung Suet Ying) wears a cochlear implant and practices speech relentlessly, trying to erase her differences to blend into the mainstream hearing world. Wolf (Neo Yau) stands proudly in his identity, fiercely protecting his community and sign language. Meanwhile, Alan (Marco Ng) exhausts himself trying to walk the tightrope between two entirely different worlds.

Isn't this the exact reflection of the immigrant journey?

When we move to a new country, to be accepted and to "blend in," do we sometimes try to wash away our "Hong Kong" labels? Or do we, like Wolf, fiercely guard our roots and culture? Or are we constantly like Alan, struggling to find a comfortable balance between the two?

Featuring a Golden Horse Best Actress-winning performance by Chung Suet Ying, this film doesn't force a right or wrong answer. Instead, it offers a gentle, heartbreakingly real embrace to anyone who feels exhausted by the search for belonging. It quietly reminds us that true acceptance doesn't come from the outside world—it begins with embracing your own truth.
